When Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Popular Photo Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her back yard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other others in the area, detected loud noises echoing around the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her apartment, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a couple who had hurried up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up behind her. The person was a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the path that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would signal you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of valour in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics caring for dozens of the injured.

Local Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the violence becoming a makeshift hospital. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, including rushing into the surf to assist people who were struggling.

After the events, comments of gratitude circulated widely. One post shared appreciation for the responders who showed that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The squad of beach patrol issued a statement, noting they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. We are touched by the care directed at our responders,” the organization stated. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those affected.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many permanent lifeguards, stated that the staff acted heroically from the second the violence began through to late that night.

“We have heard so many moving narratives, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a mayor.

“The team exhibit altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines safe for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the presence of such darkness.”
