The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is enduring water scarcity. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and strained its massive agricultural sector.

An Update Indicates Zero Drought

A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change resulted from a period of significant storms that topped up key lakes like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

The journey here featured powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, areas like northeastern California were still classified as abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 eliminated those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

But, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions should not be confused with complete water security. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for future water availability. Hydrology managers point out that it is premature to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this positive water situation for the months to come.
