Should We Are Witnessing the Downfall of the Movement of Attacking Play, Let’s Savour What It Created.
The Journey of a Phenomenon tends to be marked by specific steps.
1. The Grand Vision
A dominant personality or coaches introduce a revolutionary approach that promises a solution for disconnected individuals.
So here we are. Plans are in motion to storm the compound in Australia. The gunships are circling. Conflict emerges from within. An isolated player, naked, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET written on his body as a statement, has emerged through the lines and is removed with discretion to a different team elsewhere.
Remember the start, when the world was still young? The days of Bazball 1.0, of Bazball without brains.
2. The Honeymoon Phase
Movement founders promise a reboot, optimism ahead, love, redemption among a group who all believe in the big idea.
What was this thing back then? Just men on a balcony feeling good. Ink. Strength. Jawlines. Peak performance vibes. Oh sure, The squad often say Bazball doesn’t actually exist, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what did we see?
But we know what it is. It’s the player playing a shot so outrageous it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the captain in ultimate mode, an expression conveying: thoughtful warrior, strong features, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you almost imagine to notice and see him playing at mid-off shirtless embracing nature.
It’s Ben Duckett continuing to have permission addressing the media, resembling a cheerful animal formally attired, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the energy, initially, was entirely positive.
3. Expansion Period
Building period. Togetherness strengthened by rote learning of mantras. These beliefs may seem irrational to prove commitment.
Does anyone else feel? The backlash, the anger, the sense of betrayal following the initial loss feels overblown, unwarranted. The batting collapsed in Perth, as history shows. They were torn apart in the field in a short span when tactics failed, manipulated by the opponent playing aggressively but smarter, adaptive to conditions, an athlete shining with aura.
And now we have this the criticism, the frustration, the sense of English Test cricket as a failure. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be purged, flame-throwered, defeated via traditional methods of Mitchell Starc’s movements, the simple basics of the bowler, out there celebrating successes modestly as if receiving a pleasant gift. How will they respond?
4. Hate Bonding
Problems arise from failures in the plan. However, faults are ignored. It turns to hostility externally.
In truth, approaching from the second Test, we are at a critical juncture in the journey of this movement. They might succeed in the next Test with bold tactics. More likely, they could lose just as quickly. Should they fail it appears we could be witnessing the decline.
Before that happens, several aspects to consider about this. In the past, during the initial excitement, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. People were very angry, which demonstrated since it’s clear the best way of proving that it’s not a closed group is should followers react defensively objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.
What has happened in the last few days is just as interesting. Opposition to the style has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, critical analysts, images of frustrated travelling fans disappointed by the short match, like a room full of people wanting fairness.
On the other hand, exists the larger scene of Australia’s more nuanced ingrained annoyance towards the unconventional visitors, stating, the methods you value and have honed to distinguish yourselves from others, it’s just a joke after all.
Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. The style was a trend since the sport itself is insular. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a clique, an elite gathering, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history behind it. It has long been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the imperial sport of the British, the pioneering brand. And notably, the nation has its own culture, a structure of hidden ranks, a monarchy still exists.
England’s cricketers have been sealed up in this system for years. In trying to escape from it, to foster positivity, they are just repeating their past, forming a new circle, a limited community, but doing it this time with a new team and a coach who wants you to be yourself if you fit the mold.
Focus on the moment. Embrace challenges. But no matter how fast and far you run, you’re always basically in the same place.
Reflecting on this, now is the time to show understanding for the approach, to recognize its positives, that are numerous. What is Bazball? Promoting liberation. Defying norms. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
