Forecasters have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are expected to be low, making warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Warnings Activated

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this meant the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
