The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
