Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to match the higher calling he encountered as England’s manager.

The former coach expressed his aim to channel his attention toward engaging the youth and combating what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently found in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Outside of The Sport

In a recent radio interview, the manager was prompted regarding talk linking him with open coaching positions in the top flight and elsewhere.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Commitment to Positive Examples

Ahead of the launch of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate shared that he is deeply committed about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his period as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He feels that his journey leading the national team, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, Southgate observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Common Ground Above Conflict

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often centers on division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is set to offer deeper reflections on management and national identity inspired by his remarkable professional journey.
