Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues following disclosing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The Germany international has been sidelined since August following knee surgery. Initially expected to return at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when increasing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This news leaves a tactical puzzle for the midweek match against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus remains available following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Linger

Further fitness issues affect centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Therefore, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to continue in the backline for the league leaders.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on squad depth ahead of this season has placed the club in a far better place to deal with such absences.

Squad Depth Key to Title Challenge

In response if more options was benefiting their championship push, the manager agreed. “Yes, as this campaign has been worse in some areas, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in various roles, and they have to be able to adapt to new tasks if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Star

Commenting on the setback highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the next level and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”

Arteta expressed his keenness to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, for me, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his character, his attitude. I see him suffer being outside.”

“His playing record is outstanding, he's rarely been injured, and I look forward to see him return with the squad and playing because I feel it’s going to be a massive boost.”
